FREDERICK DESIGN STUDIO
Addition to a Boston Arts and Crafts house
This 2-story addition was designed for a charming but undersized home on a street in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston.  A modest budget called for a new Television Room, Breakfast Room, 2 Bedrooms and a Bath.  The entire new program plus two exterior balconies were accommodated within a footprint of 732 square feet.

Right: New first and second floor balconies in the addition engage generous tree boughs in the rear yard.

Above: The addition, partially visible behind the tree at left, extends behind the original house (see photo, right).  The addition continues the vocabulary of the house and strengthens its street presence, placing it in more appropriate scale with its larger neighbors.

Above: The 2-story addition extends across the full width of the house.  Combined with an old garage that was converted to an outbuilding, it frames a pleasant outdoor yard for dining and recreation.
